(Newser) – One person is dead and another five people have been shot after a gunman opened fire in an office complex in downtown Orlando, Fla., reports the Sentinel. Police, who initially reported more victims, are still looking for the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Jason Rodriguez. He is a former employee of a business in the 16-story building, called Legions Place.

"We've got everybody in one office, with the door barricaded with a chest of drawers," one woman told the newspaper. "There are about 20 of us in here. We're scared."

Looking with @netstorm2k9 and plus 4 thumbs, YES , Britain has lots of 1 dead 4 injured,..::rolls eyes ,and camps like Fort Hood and hitting hit 13 dead ,,..::rolls eyes Etc .etc.and etc.. The same thing happens all the time rolls eyes.and any google search shows single and double death in the US that are so common there not reported,unless U go to a local paper.

@Mad, actually it's a million times easier to kill someone with a knife. There's no noise to call attention, you can do it up close, and hit spots much more accurately. It's easier to get away with, because there's no gsw, and you'll rarely get identified by forensics because blades don't leave specific ballistics. And a knife doesn't have to be made of metal, so you can sneak them through metal detectors. And as for dehumanizing, most people have an inherent difficulty killing someone in whatever fashion. If you've gotten past that part of your conscience, then it really doesn't matter what weapon you choose. As for distance - have you never heard of the bow?

So everyone listen to netstorm , get rid of guns there is a thing MILLION times better. but it does take guts to get up close and personal.which might stop some ( maybe only one? I think more.well one less death is good)but lacks the feeling of power when you hold it, that might give you the guts to kill in the first place. using it more then once in a public area, U could get stopped because other make shift weapons can stop a knife.It would be hard to walk into a store with the man across a counter to use it before he can get his though,there not good for attempting suicide, most PPL who try, just want attention,and want to be saved, I would use a gun here ,takes the attempt of the equation. but you don't have to worry about criminals taking away yours or using it against you. they have there own. Oh, kids been around them all the time they hardly accidentally go off,hurting themselves or others.Criminals might just threaten with them rather then shooting first robbing later.because of getting close again. and it could be used against the criminal. I always asked one question to hand gun enthisiet that never gets a reply only double talk. If you had 100 accidental deaths or mass killing like this a day in your city would you would ask the government to do something. Yes or No ?There is a reply button below.

This happened at 11 or 12? Too bad I just started hearing sirens/helicopters and seeing any police on SR 50 at like 1:15 at the earliest. I'm less than a mile from the site on the very busy East side of Downtown Orlando (Colonialtown). I guess I'm somehow grateful to be unemployed today. Out of harm's way of an imploding local economy coupled with emotionally explosive individuals with guns, no doubt legally obtained. Yeah, I've heard the NRA's tired mantra "guns don't kill people. . ." Here in Florida not only can you get off scott-free with shooting someone who you perceive to be trespassing on your home property, whether or not you are correct, now it's within your rights to shoot perceived trespassers in the back as they retreat from your property. I'm not even kidding, it's called the "stand your ground" law. Yee-haw! Reply

You are miss informed. The stand your ground law only applies to people who present ability, opportunity and apparent intent to do grave bodily injury to you or someone else. That is the common denominator in all Florida justifiable homocides, out side of the home. It is also helpful to win an armed encounter if you own a gun and are profficient with it.

Mad, why then does Switzerland, who issues military weapons to it's citizenry, and encourages carry of firearms, have nearly no crime? I will agree with you that guns missused are a saddening thing for us all, but less that 1/10 of 1% of American gun owners misbehave with them. How can you justify punnishing the more than 99.9% who are completely normal? I have carried a firearm for around 30 years, and been in heated arguments, and had to draw it a time or two, but no one was hurt. I stopped a robbery, a burglary, a couple of would be aggravated assaults and kept a child molester away. Tell my kid you don't want me to own a gun and she will disagree with you vehemantly! Reply
