Munley saved a fellow officer while a cop in NC

(Newser) – Kimberly Munley is being hailed as a hero for bringing down the Fort Hood shooter while taking three bullets herself, and her former partner isn't a bit surprised. Shaun Appler, who worked with her years ago in North Carolina, tells the Austin American-Statesman that he began calling her "Mighty Mouse" after she leaped through the air to free him from an assailant choking him and trying to grab his gun.

"She saved my life that night," Appler says. "When I found out the female officer at Fort Hood was Kim, I wasn't surprised. Kim not only has the training, I know she was mentally prepared to know what to do when you get into that situation." He spoke to her by phone yesterday. "She is in good spirits, although she is obviously saddled with the loss of life that occurred there."

(NEWSER) - The US soldier who allegedly planned to bomb Fort Hood military base had a disruptive and defiant court appearance today, reports the AP . Pfc. Naser Abdo would not stand up when asked and yelled "Nidal Hasan Fort Hood 2009" as he was leaving, referring to the Army psychiatrist accused of shooting up the base. Authorities arrested Abdo—a 21-year-old native of Texas who converted to Islam when he was 17—at a motel near Fort Hood earlier this week. He was AWOL at the time. More»

AWOL Muslim private arrested with bomb-making material

(NEWSER) - The US soldier arrested over a possible second attack on Fort Hood told police he wanted to attack troops there, reports CNN . Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo, 21, apparently acted alone, said the local police chief, noting that he wasn’t aware of any other threat to the base. Abdo, a Muslim soldier who went AWOL from Fort Campbell in Kentucky following child porn charges, was arrested at a traffic stop on a tip from a gun shop. More»

(NEWSER) - Nidal Hasan, the alleged shooter in the Fort Hood massacre, will face a military trial and could, if convicted, be sentenced to death, Fort Hood's commanding general announced today. Hasan's lawyers had tried to convince the military that a death penalty case would be too expensive, time consuming, and restrictive, but to no avail. Hasan will face 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder, according to the AP . More»

Officers accused of poor leadership regarding Nidal Hasan

(NEWSER) - The Army has begun "adverse administrative action" against nine officers for "administrative and leadership failures relating to the career of Maj. Nidal Hasan," the alleged Fort Hood shooter, it announced yesterday in a statement. "Although no single event directly led to the tragedy at Fort Hood, certain officers clearly failed to meet the high standards expected of their profession," the statement said. More»
