Sox Slugfest Surmounts Sorry Start

Posted Sep 12, 07 6:20 AM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – The Red Sox trailed 8-1 last night after Tim Wakefield and his immediate relief were pounded by the Devil Rays, but Boston's bats kicked into gear to score four runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, and six in the sixth, and finally a season high of 16 to Tampa Bay's 10, the Globe reports.

It was the team's biggest comeback in seven years. "Down 8-1's not really the formula," admitted manager Terry Francona, but his offense made it work this time. Every Red Sox starter had at least one RBI, except Mike Lowell, who made up for it by bagging four hits and scoring three runs. Boston's relief pitching rallied as well, stifling a Devil Rays comeback.
