Mormons Back Salt Lake Gay Rights Law

Church says it won't drop opposition to gay marriage

(Newser) – The Mormon church has come out in support of gay rights legislation for the first time in its history, backing a pair of Salt Lake City ordinances passed yesterday by the city council protecting gays from discrimination in housing and employment. "The church supports these ordinances because they are fair and reasonable and do not do violence to the institution of marriage," the church's spokesman said.

The laws ban discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, the AP reports. The church's support does not mark a shift in its stance on gay rights, the spokesman added, saying it would continue to defend "the bedrock foundation of marriage between a man and a woman." In August 2008 the church issued a statement saying it supports gay rights related to hospitalization, medical care, housing or probate as long as they "do not infringe on the integrity of the traditional family or the constitutional rights of churches."

@ fondue marriage has been around a lot long than Jesus being nailed to a cross, (that is true). therefore they don't get exclusive right to define a legal agreement.( couldn't quite wrap my head around that argumentation Please explain) @ Wills, understand that Dan is a Christian, ( Biblical as opposed to social christian actually, many call themselves christian but don't believe in the Godhood of Christ denying the trinity so technically they are not Christians. Mormons are case in point) they are supposed to be worldly. ( I think you meant -not worldly- but that is itself a misunderstanding. We are to subdue the effects of sin in the world. The idea that christians are not be be partakers of or "in the world" or "worldly" is true only to a certain extent. I love a good rock and role concert or Movie and if you knew me you would say that I live a fairly "worldly" life but don't let those things I enjoy fool you.) And for the record Dan, I'm a male. (Fondue if ever I besmirtched your character by calling you female its only because I made an "honest" mistake.)

@wally - =o) Hey, I know I get angry at people who further the stereotypes or lies about homosexuality, but I really do respect each person's position even if I don't agree with it. That's why I never had a problem with Prejean's answer to Perez's question (whcih should not have been asked anyway, imo). She is free to feel the way she feels. Sending ya love and hoping for many blessings on your journey with this, no matter where it leads you...

Well, marriage has been around a lot long than Jesus being nailed to a cross, therefore they don't get exclusive right to define a legal agreement. @ Wills, understand that Dan is a Christian, they are supposed to be worldly. And for the record Dan, I'm a male.
