The first book of Norman Mailer's that I ever read, and a good choice. And Generation Kill--watched every episode and it was fantastic. Weird that it isn't back--half the writing team of The Wire, which if you have not watched, may I hand you a present--five seasons of The Wire on Itunes--download it and do it in a week what took me four years. Other than Deadwood, best writing ever. Ever. My best friend is a hugely good writer. I mean she makes the bestseller list but is still literary and she ranks--Deadwood and then the Wire--close call but she's into craft and I'm into story--Wire.

Wicked enoughie and good reminder. The Battle of Stalingrad-- the worst thing man has ever committed on themselves. When I was ten I lived in Berlin with my NCO daddy and still French mother so we lived in the city. This was the end of the tour, I was there in 62. But, I lived next door to a one-armed wermacht officer who was at stalingrad and my mother would have been horrified if she'd known what he told me. Why I hate war. Why I'm not Liberal, or Conservative but a Humanist. I just don't want people to die so horribly and needlessly. My brilliant son who has a doctorate in physics probably couldn't tell you squat about WWII. How depressing. He can make an MRI, but he has no understanding of the history that got us to his MRI. My daughter-in-law is worse--Doctorate in Biochemistry and thinks that viruses are nature's toilet flush. She makes your vaccines and is good at that, but she couldn't name a general in WWII. Am I wrong to think that she is lacking something vital about the world?

Need to put Generation Kill (mini series) on there.
