Fake Marine Busted After Reunion

Banker shows off chestful of medals to old classmates

(Newser) – A man who'd been a nerdy, unathletic band member at his California high school shocked classmates recently by turning up at his 20th reunion as a highly decorated Marine. Classmates were duly impressed by Steve Burton's transformation, but one, now a Navy commander, was so stunned by Burton's chestful of medals that he sent photos of Burton in his uniform to military authorities. They discovered that he'd never served a day in the forces, much less earned a Purple Heart or Navy Cross.

Turns out it's not only pathetic but illegal to pose as a Marine: Burton, a banker in real life, has been hit with a charge of unauthorized wearing of military medals or decorations under the Stolen Valor Act. He could face up to a year in jail, a penalty that sounds harsh to some classmates. "I don't think they should prosecute him. It's a waste of taxpayer dollars," a former classmate tells the San Francisco Chronicle. "I think maybe he should write a formal apology to Marines everywhere."

A large number of men and women who have received it have never lived to wear them. And so when I see somebody like Burton sporting a Navy Cross and obviously has never served, it really bothers me. - Medal expert Doug Sterner

I'm a bit appalled that he would do such a thing, but I'm also not overly surprised.

one of Burton's classmates

Just one more thing, sdavis969 there is no such thing as a former marine. If you truly were in the corps you'd know that. And it is a very big deal, when some random guy like that can pretend to have had an award that many of Marines have paid for with their lives.

As tempting as it may seem, sending this idiot to boot will mean far worse to many of the recruits we have in San Diego and Paris Island. This guy is an integrity violator and a turd, he'd be a bad influence on future marines, and a bad example for future adults. All in all, I think the best place for him would be Leavenworth, if he he wants to brag that he's a marine, why don't we try and punish him like one.

Those in the White House, Senate and House, won actual elections, like true soldiers were in actual service. Fakes like this guy, remind me more of G.W., who was selected, not elected.
