(Newser) – In a tribute to the late Steve Irwin, a scientist who discovered a new species of snail in northeastern Australia has named it after the famed “Crocodile Hunter.” Says John Stanisic of the Queensland Museum, “Crikey steveirwini is a colorful snail, with swirling bands of creamy yellow, orange-brown and chocolate giving the shell an overall khaki appearance. It was the khaki color that immediately drew the connection to the late Crocodile Hunter.”

I loved Steve Irwin, but this is too funny not to thumbs up.

schmidkoff. Since he lived by having very quick reactions, catching snakes and such, having a snail named for him is sort of appropriate in a way. He miscalculated how slowly a land animal like himself can be when physically reacting to a survival situation under water. He was also just very very unlucky. I was quite a freak accident. But even that is understandable when you consider how often he risked himself, like playing russian roulette, with some of the creatures he caught bare-handed.

Accident? I'm pretty sure that stingray meant to do what it did. I'm pretty sure Steve meant to be there.
