Live Fish Dinner on YouTube Sparks Uproar

PETA rips cruel food video

Footage of Chinese diners tucking into a still-breathing fish has outraged animal rights groups. The video, which has attracted thousands of viewers on YouTube, shows the fish being picked apart with chopsticks as diners laugh and the fish gapes. It had been kept alive during cooking with a wet towel over its head. PETA calls the video "disgusting" and says "every decent person should be shocked," the Telegraph reports.

"I don’t think it is fair to accuse other cultures of having certain negative habits and traditions," a spokesman from China's British embassy said in response to recent complaints about China's treatment of animals. “We have our traditions, as the Spanish have bullfighting, and you, until recently, had foxhunting. We did not criticize you or the Spanish for this."
