(NEWSER) - Mike Huckabee has more to say on both of his recent headline-making statements: That Barack Obama grew up in Kenya , and that Natalie Portman is setting a bad example with her out-of-wedlock pregnancy. Mediaite reports Huckabee’s comments from Sirius Radio’s POTUS channel:

• On Kenya: “The reaction ranged from, ‘This guy is so dumb he doesn’t know that Barack Obama grew up in Indonesia not Kenya,’ all the way to the other extreme, I saw people like Andrea Mitchell saying, ‘Oh no, he did this on purpose, he is very smart and shrewd, he did this in a calculating way.' Well, I can’t be both. I can’t be the dumbest guy in the room and the smartest guy in the room at the same time. I have to be one or the other, or maybe it was just that I made a mistake, I corrected it.”

Joe Klein: His backtracking on Obama comment makes no sense

(NEWSER) - First, Mike Huckabee says Barack Obama grew up in Kenya and may have been influenced by the Mau Mau revolution there. Then he backtracks and says he meant Indonesia, which doesn't make a lot of sense because the Mau Mau revolution was, in fact, in Kenya. Not buying it, writes Joe Klein. Huckabee "always struck me as a good guy, more concerned about working-class America than most of his rivals," he writes in Time . "These comments, however, and his subsequent lie that he really meant Indonesia not Kenya, really show a demented, perverse sensibility, and they demonstrate some of the ugliness at the heart of Obama hatred." Former governor misspoke, says rep

(NEWSER) - Mike Huckabee hasn't joined the birthers but he seems a bit mixed up about the details of President Obama's life. The possible GOP presidential contender told a radio host earlier this week that Obama, "having grown up in Kenya," might view the British as imperialists. Huckabee later said Obama lived in Kenya with his father and grandfather, when in fact the president grew up mostly in Hawaii but spent four years in Indonesia as a child. (NEWSER) - In attacking gay marriage, Mike Huckabee inadvertently offered an excellent defense of it, writes Ruth Marcus. He went from criticizing President Obama’s decision not to defend the gay-marriage ban to pointing out the difficult “economic reality of out-of-wedlock children.” The fact is, “gays and lesbians are clamoring for the right to avoid the very societal ill that Huckabee decries,” writes Marcus in the Washington Post .
