Bing, News Corp Talks Offer Hope for Media

Media could gain from brewing bidding war

Share

(Newser) – Microsoft is offering News Corp and other media companies money to yank their content from Google’s search engine and list it instead on Bing. The offer, likely prompted by a threat from Rupert Murdoch to remove content from Google, “is all about Microsoft hurting Google’s margins,” said one publisher. But it's also good news for media providers, who could find themselves the object of a bidding war for copy, reports the Financial Times.

The deal “puts enormous value on content if search engines are prepared to pay us to index with them,” the publisher tells the Financial Times. Google, which has acted unconcerned about Murdoch’s threat to pull News Corp content, continued to downplay the importance of news. “Economically, it’s not a big part of how we generate revenue,” Google’s UK director Matt Brittin said last week.

I had given thought to using BING rather than GOOGLE and even used BING for a few searches but was disappointed with its content. -----------------------------------------------------------However, if BING and NEWS CORP. tie up, I'd NEVER open BING again.----------------------------------------------------------Nothing in NEWS CORP is of interest to me or other real, thinking, intelligent Americans! Yes, another ding against Bing! Although I have no problem with News Corp not coming up in search results. I've tried Bing too and haven't been impressed. I'm even less impressed by their site which shows videos of news clips, etc. It's new and barely functioning and has taken over the old format which was much better.

"...But it's also good news for media providers, who could find themselves the object of a bidding war for copy..." I wonder if they've approached Newser yet? If we start seeing more and more Newser sourced stories, we'll know they've figured out the middle man game! :-) Reply
