What Is it About Palin? Hard to Say

'Issues? Where are you going with that?' fan asks interviewer

(Newser) – What it is exactly that captivates supporters of Sarah Palin? That's hard to say, especially for them. They gush about their gal because she stands for "freedom" and "realness," and because she's the "epitome of conservativeness" in a video by the New Left Media. But when it comes to details, they're fuzzy. "Help me out here, guys," one woman pleads with friends when an interviewer asks outside Ohio bookstore what issues Palin should address as president.

Another "can't think of her policies right off the bat," while one woman supporter asks suspiciously: "Issues? Where are you going with that?" Still another, however, is crystal clear about one position she staunchly shares with Palin: "Drill, baby, drill."

They identify with her; they finally have a candidate as stupid as they are. Reply

An SNL Jeopardy skit with Palin, George Bush, and Glen Beck sorta writes itself, doesn't it?

Most of her followers think that, as soon as SP becomes president, God will bless the US: The US will declare itself a Christian country, gays will disappear, women will no longer vote or work outside the home, abortion and contraception will become illegal, the US will bomb Iraq and China and kill all the Palestinians on Israel's West Bank, sex between unmarried adults will be a crime punishable by death, immigrants will be shot on site, every state will be forced to drill for oil or mine for coal and no one, NO ONE who can't afford it will get health care. Sounds like Heaven, doesn't it?

In a nutshell? They identify not with Palin's stupidity but with her obvious lack of self esteem and provenance that she brashly and pluckily compensates for. She's got the same appeal as a winning Queen for a Day contestant. Sarah is frowned on by the cool kids, just as her supporters were. But Sarah gets a candidacy, Sarah gets a $150K wardrobe. Sarah gets a book contract. I find that Sarah's supporters identify with her dysfunctional life -- they most often seem to be working moms who feel profoundly out of control of their disappointing kids. In forgiving Sarah for having a dimwitted kid with a kid and for the vandal & drugged out kid who's been shipped off to the military to shape up, they forgive themselves.. They identify with Palin's haphazard life, her lack of polish, lack of education and experience. They identify with her somewhat neglectful "just a hockey mom" pose. They identify with her plucky amateur under dog against the big boys story line . And most importantly, they aspire to her Cinderella-in-a-soap-opera life. What middle class working mom stuck in dead end job and a dead end marriage doesn't sigh over a queen for a day $150K shopping spree and $15K a week hair & make-up stylist? Sarah's a walking made for TV movie for women feeling trapped and lacking even Kaie Couric's supposed lack of self esteem. Somewhat attractive but not really beautiful, Palin is accessible.
