Obama: I'll 'Finish the Job' in Afghanistan

President's troop decision expected this week

(Newser) – He didn't tip his hand on many troops it would take, but President Obama said today that he intends to "finish the job" in Afghanistan. He promised to unveil a strategy after Thanksgiving that will "dismantle and degrade” the enemy while making sure that "al Qaeda and its extremist allies cannot operate," reports the New York Times. Two news outlets, CNN and McClatchy, say the president has settled on sending 34,000 troops.

"I feel very confident that when the American people hear a clear rationale for what we're doing there, and how we intend to achieve our goals, that they will be supportive," said the president, who seemed to criticize the Bush administration's handling of the war. "After eight years, some of those years in which we did not have, I think, either the resources or the strategy to get the job done, it is my intention to finish the job."

@ DLY, Troll, your hero GW and Cheney fcked up Guantanamo, Iraq, Afghanistan, capturing Bin Lauden, the American economy including home ownership, jobs, and anything else this country once offered. The Republican influence was/is so bad that the GOP has locked down GW Bush from releasing his "memoirs" due to the fact the stupid SOB would once more expose his ignorance of all the damage he did by pretending how rosy he left the economy. GW is/was a fiasco and you rewarded him by electing him twice. Obama walked into a White House that GW had turned into a public toilet and inflicted so much damage this country may never fully recover. So much in fact the so called "American Dream" of Home Ownership has been replaced by a home rental mentality that will last for 20 years or more. The sadest part of the entire thing is now Obama is attempting to repair 8 years damage and like a pack of yipping rabid dogs the Republicans are snapping at his heals wanting to know why it isn't repaired yet instead of acknowledging the fact that they are responsible for the damage due to their ignorance and the best you can do is be a troll as you await your Welfare check each month and yes apparently that is a true statement as you are on the Net 24/7 except for the 1st and 15th of every month and also Friday and Saturday nights when you hold your cross burnings. Go do something constitutive like catch a 9mm bullet with your teeth or perhaps a human road block for a semi, your wife could use the break or so we hear. Hurry up and start your revolution so you can be the first mad dog I put down, please hurry. And yes, I look forward to the day you grow a set and jump up like a bad a$$ because that is the day the world will be less one more a$$wipe you balless wonder ,

I believe the president's duties do include commander in chief, so mr. obama has earned that I suppose. However, seriously, I don't think any president should salute our soldiers (such as when boarding the Marine helicopter) "UNLESS" they have indeed served in the US military. It just seems fake.

By the way "Ucant" I believe that this plan was formulated based upon the advice of his military and diplomatic experts and advisors after thoughtful deliberation. Whoever was in charge of letting Obama say he'd "finish the job" in Afghanistan needs to be fired immediately. If there's one thing politicians of every stripe should have learned by now, it's to not be making statements of grand certitude with regard to wars. You can make your own list of clunker statements that have come back to haunt former President, and Obama himself should have been a little smarter, or less naive, than to come up with his own.
