Blog site removes it, not Google, then issues apology

(Newser) – It's finally gone. The image of Michelle Obama altered to look like a monkey is no longer showing up under a Google image search. The blog site that posted it, "Hot Girls," removed it and issued an apology in Chinese and English, reports the LA Times. The photo stirred controversy when Google declined to remove it from the results page over free-speech concerns.

The apology, in shaky English, reads: "I am very sorry for this article, and that this is the program automatically issued a document from the article. Do not the subject of race and politics make the discussion too radical and sincere hope that the world is very peaceful."

@Mad: I only note the joining date of users when I am curious about who's who. There are just a few too many "similar" names about lately and it helps to know when the "fake" ones joined. I'm flattered that you took the time to check out those who like me. Am I now guilty by association? ;)

So -- Face-0f-RNC has now apparently stolen the NEW avatar of Face-Of-RNC as well as assumed a username misleadingly similar. These games are becoming really tiresome. As Shonangreg says, all too often the trolling has completely eliminated any discussion of this story by distracting everyone. This thread is an extreme example of that. I think we may have lost him for that reason and that will be a great loss to this site. There's a place where discussion of the sabotage of the trolls and the tactics of their enemies should occur. Go to the band of "quick links" to topics at the top of the page and click on MORE at the far right, You'll find the link to newser's Facebook discussions there under COMMUNITY. I agree with Google on the free speech issue. I've seen that altered image of Michelle floating around in Google images since the 2008 campaign. I believe there is more reason for outrage over this image of Michele, then the same alterations to Bush, since in Michele's instance, she is just a spouse. This treatment of Michele was something that Laura Bush rarely if ever had to endure. Reply
