Good-Guy Hancock Tasked With Defending Bad BCS

Fighting the rising cry for playoffs is one of sport's worst jobs

Share

(Newser) – Bill Hancock is one of the best-liked people in the sporting world, but he's been tasked with defending one of its most-hated systems, writes Sean Gregory. Hancock, a former director of the Final Four, has been appointed as the first permanent director of the Bowl Championship Series. That makes him a target for everyone—from President Obama on down—who think there's got to be a better way than the incomprehensible BCS system to find a national champion of college football.

Hancock's just about the last man left defending the system against calls for a March Madness-style football playoff, Gregory writes in Time. The arguments against BCS aren't going to stop, but at least Hancock may be able to silence some critics with his "passion, dignity and down-to-earth charm." Hancock could start with the president, Gregory writes. Who knows, maybe Obama can use Beer Summit II to "convince him to get out of this BCS business."

"I love college football," says Hancock. "I believe in the BCS because a playoff would be equally contentious."   (AP Photo)

Hancock is such a universally liked guy that when his new job as head of the BCS was announced on Nov. 17, there was a collective cringe in the college sports world. - Sean Gregory

The following is for those concerned with newser's failure to post anything other than this football story since the Tiger Woods "Alleged Mistress" update nearly 10 hours ago: "CLIMATE GATE" EMAILS CALLED SMEAR CAMPAIGN (Reuters) Three U.S. scientists who have authored UN IPCC reports said today that stolen emails are being used by special interests to sabotage the Copenhagen climate talks and confuse the public. The authors of a new report on accelerating climate change used a conference call with reporters to defend Britain's University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit (CRU), where personal email going back to 1996 was hacked and posted on the Internet. An official CRU statement says the use of stolen data is an example of a "vexatious campaign" to distract from the "highest-quality of scientific investigation and interpretation." CRU is considered one of the world's leading institutions concerned with human-caused global warming. In the call by Richard Somerville at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Michael Mann of Penn State, and Eric Steig of University of Washington, Mann said that statements have been taken out of context to turn "something innocent into something nefarious." Prominent climate skeptic Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) says he will investigate how the U.N. IPCC "cooked the science." Inhofe said he is pleased with the timing of the controversy: "The interesting part of this is it's happening right before Copenhagen. And, so, the timing couldn't be better." Well while you are doing Newsers job don't forget to toss in another political Hot Potato where failure to capture Bin Laden was laid firmly at GW Bush doorstep due to the fact that Rumsfield held troops back and allowed Bin Lauden to walk freely across the Afghan border into the safety of Pakistan: http://foreign.senate.gov/

Its a weekend and a holiday weekend at that. Newser is always thin on news on Sundays. If you don't like how Newser is run then GTFO, there are many other news services that would suit your needs better. Whats the point of bitching about it in the comment section of an article? Reply
