'School of Pot' Opens in Michigan

Cannabis college teaches the secrets of growing

Share

(Newser) – It only sounds like a Judd Apatow movie: A 24-year-old has opened a "School of Pot" in Michigan to teach everything from growing techniques to special brownie recipes. The $485, six-week program gives students the rundown on botany basics as well as preparation techniques. The New York Times reports that Med Grow Cannabis College's young founder has economic stimulus in mind: "This state needs jobs, and we think medical marijuana can stimulate the state economy with hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars."

The "school," actually a non-accredited business, attracts a range of would-be growers in recession-ravaged Michigan. In the state, anyone over 21 with a clear record can be named a "caregiver" and grow marijuana for up to five patients. One student, already a caregiver for the elderly, is hoping to turn some of her clients onto marijuana's benefits; other students are still getting used to the idea of their new venture. Says one: “It’s a business opportunity, but some people are still going to look at you funny. But I’m going to do it anyway.”
