Conservative Wins in Testy Honduran Election

US recognizes result, though deposed president was never restored

(Newser) – Conservative Porfirio Lobo has emerged as the winner in yesterday's Honduran election, and appears set to take the central American nation's disputed presidency as it continues to reel from the crisis sparked by last summer's coup. After initially condemning the coup, Washington shifted gears to support this weekend's election, which most of Latin America refused to recognize, the New York Times reports.

Former president Manuel Zelaya, deposed during the coup, urged supporters to boycott the vote. "They all promise change, but the one who really wanted to make change was Mel Zelaya,” one voter said. “And look what they did to him.”

Lindamae, how nice to realize your bizarre, nonsensical views have been absent from newser for some time now (this is being written in early Feb 2010.) If only I could say the same for dontlikeyou.

That simply is not true. How can you lie about this? You have been drinking from the Kool Aid fountain. Try to read some news articles from European countries - those without a political agenda to destroy democracies. Or are you just another socialist wanna-be? Please explain.

How wonderful! Honduras has been able to keep their Constitution in spite of the efforts of Obama, Chevez, Castro and the other despots of South America. That Obama supported Zelaya is an embarrassment to America. He and Hillary should be ashamed of themselves for trying to destroy a democracy which was following the rules of their Constitution and supporting the crazies who tried to take over Honduras - making it another Socialist state.
