NY State of Mind Almost as Bad as Calif.'s

Both states' revenues, budgets, legislatures create cause for alarm

Share

(Newser) – Don’t look now, New Yorkers, but your state government is sinking to California-like depths of lousiness. New York’s 2010 budgetary fitness ranks below that of 33 other states in Pew’s latest ranking, trailing the likes of Louisiana, Alaska, and South Carolina. And that’s unlikely to improve, “because New York’s elected officials seem determined to make us No. 1 in dysfunction,” Chris Smith writes for New York magazine.

Legislators are so beholden to campaign donors, particularly unions representing teachers and health care workers, that they won’t make serious spending cuts. They won’t do something until the state’s sunk “to truly Californian desperation.” That might not take long. Though New York’s foreclosure and unemployment figures are better, it’s losing revenue faster. “California’s budget is in worse shape now,” said one analyst. “But we could get there yet.”

All thye state pensions have placed a burden on the states...but the states have these retirment options and funds for those that seve in the State legistature too. And most states have failed to fund them as the law has required..even when things were good..so blame your gov't officials for not fulfilling the law and funding them as required..if they change the laws they change their retirement too..so I think everyone will be gradfatered in and new employeees will have a different retiremnt program. Calif and NY are both blue states and broke. How did that happen? Trolls in control is how that happened. 2010 is going red......that marks the beginning of the end for Obama in 2012...... Reply
