(Newser) – British rocker Pete Doherty was booed off a Munich stage after crashing a concert lineup and singing the first verse of the German national anthem—the part associated with the Nazi regime. The Babyshambles frontman and onetime Kate Moss boytoy "sang Deutschland, Deutschland Über Alles four times," a rep for the radio station that was broadcasting the concert, and quickly cut the live feed, tells Der Spiegel.

A drunk Doherty opened with a sing-along version of Hit the Road, Jack, which the crowd seemed to enjoy. But his transition to the first verse of Das Deutschlandied—the third verse of which remains the national anthem—elicited derisive whistling and booing. He attempted to go on, but "we could no longer guarantee his safety," a rep for the concert organizer said. His spokeswoman tells Sky News Doherty was "unaware of the controversy surrounding the German national anthem and he deeply apologizes if he has caused any offense."
