Seattle police have shot and killed the man suspected of gunning down four police officers in Lakewood, a suburb 35 miles south of the city, on Sunday. Police tracked Maurice Clemmons down early today after acting on leads about his possible acquaintances. "We knew the noose was tightening,” a police spokesman tells the Tacoma News-Tribune. “Seattle police made contact with him, and he was shot and killed.”

Clemmons was confronted by officers in a Seattle street at 2:40am and was shot when he challenged them, according to a law enforcement source. Police say Clemmons had received help from family and friends since Sunday's shooting and have detained a sister of his who they believe treated a gunshot wound he received from one of the dying officers, MSNBC reports.
