(Newser) – Canadian champion climber Guy Lacelle died yesterday after an avalanche swept him off a mountain in Montana during a climbing competition. Lacelle, considered one of the world's leading ice climbers, was ascending a gully when the team above him triggered the avalanche, authorities say. His body was retrieved by a search and rescue team. Lacelle, 54, was "a fanatical ice climber" and his death is a "huge, huge loss," the director of a climbing equipment firm tells AP.

Guy would have wanted us to climb and be thankful for another day in the hills, the organizer of the Bozeman Ice Festival said.

It’s a reminder that even small avalanches can have huge, deadly consequences. It was just one of those things. It doesn’t take much to knock you over in that steep terrain.
- Doug Chabot, director of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center

No. If he were bad add, he would be alive. The snow is the bad ass here, dumb ass. And a double dumb ass for those "courageous" climbers who leave the wife and kids behind to go risk their life for absolutely nothing. Save it for a fireman, or a cop, or the average schmoe who gets clobbered when he pushes a kid out of the way of a bus. That's someone that deserves a RIP.

Lovely way to go. Any way but in a damned hospital, with the for-profit "health" system trying to syphon off your family's inheritance before you whimper off this mortal coil. I love the comments here. We're getting away from that "all death is terribly tragic" mindset. To LIFE!!
