Jodie Hits #1 With a Bullet

Posted Sep 16, 07 2:00 CDT in Arts & Living US

(Newser) – Jodie Foster's The Brave One ranked number one with a bullet this weekend at $13.5 million, although it failed to meet studio expectations, reports Deadline Hollywood Daily. Critic Nikki Finke laments the film's reviews and marketing, but applauds Foster as a rare actress able to open a hit movie. Taking second and third this week were 3:10 to Yuma and Mr. Woodcock, starring Billy Bob Thornton.

Hold-overs Superbad and Halloween held onto the top 5, at 4th and 5th, respectively. And two newcomers gained attention in limited release this weekend: David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises boasted the weekend's best per screen average in 14 theaters and Paul Haggis' In the Valley of Elah drew about half as many per screen at 9 venues.
