'Sopranos' Bags Top Emmies

Posted Sep 17, 07 6:47 AM CDT in Arts & Living

(Newser) – "The Sopranos" took top drama honors at the Emmies last night, and won for writing and directing as well, making the HBO series the first drama in 30 years to nail all three for its finale season. Other Emmies were spread among a broad field, with ratings-challenged "30 Rock" winning outstanding comedy series. Executive producer, writer, and star Tina Fey thanked its “dozens and dozens of viewers” for their support.

Acting awards were taken by Sally Field for "Brothers & Sisters" and James Spader for "Boston Legal"; "I feel like I just stole a pile of money from the mob," Spader quipped, with the "Sopranos" cast arrayed awkwardly behind him. Ricky Gervais was a surprise win for his performance in “Extras,” marking the first comedy-lead-actor Emmy for HBO and the first  by a Brit in decades, according to the Hollywood Reporter. HBO, NBC, and ABC enjoyed six wins each.
