Arnold to Veto Gay Marriage Bill

Posted Sep 17, 07 10:10 AM CDT in Politics US

(Newser) – Gov. Schwarzenegger is signaling he'll veto California's same-sex marriage bill, arguing the measure violates the "will of the people." Schwarzenegger employed the same logic when he vetoed a similar bill two years ago, but the tides of popular sentiment are changing: the Chronicle reports that gay-marriage opponents outnumber supporters by only 2% today.

Schwarzenegger says Californians voiced their rejection of same-sex marriage when a 2000 ballot initiative gathered 61% of the vote. Gay-marriage proponents argue that the people are speaking through their elected officials who passed the bill, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Opponents aren't so sure, but the courts may have the final say.
