It seems everyone hates MTV’s Jersey Shore. But surely there must be something—maybe even five things—redeeming about the reality show, writes Neil Genzlinger in the New York Times. He takes a stab at coming up with them:

  1. It makes the Jersey Shore interesting again: “No one has found summer on the New Jersey coast exciting since the shark attacks of 1916,” Genzlinger points out. And even though the real Jersey shore is trying to distance itself from the show, “everyone involved knows there’s no such thing as bad publicity.”

  1. It’s better than the alternative: The alternative being Keeping Up With the Kardashians, a show Genzlinger fervently hopes Jersey Shore will run out of town.
  2. It’s a public service: “Too many children today are reaching their teenage years armed only with a Disney definition of ‘bad person,’” Genzlinger continues. Kids today “have no idea how much ignorance, narcissism, predatory sexism, and hair-gel abuse lurk out there in the real world.”
  3. It unmasks the true villains: The schools, teachers, gyms, and style salons that so badly failed these young guidos and guidettes can be identified and shut down.
  4. It’s, uh…: “All right, so maybe ‘five reasons to like Jersey Shore’ was setting the bar too high.”
