David Axelrod is amazed by the “sheer audacity and shamelessness” of Karl Rove’s claims about rampant spending under the Obama administration. The former Bush aide predicted last week that congressional Democrats “will run up more debt by October than Bush did in 8 years.” That would be a feat, Axelrod writes. Does Rove recall that the Bush administration “added more debt in its 8 years than all the previous administrations in the history of our republic combined?”

Thanks to "the breathtaking scope of this irresponsibility," the Bush administration's "unpaid-for policies will continue to add trillions to our deficit," Axelrod writes in the Washington Post. It took a $236 billion budget surplus with a projected 10-year surplus of $5.6 trillion and turned it in to a $1.3 trillion deficit with a prediction of an $8 trillion shortfall for the next decade by enacting costly tax cuts and prosecuting two wars “without paying for any of it.” (More David Axelrod stories.)
