Today’s the first anniversary of Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger III’s death-defying Hudson River landing, and if you’d like to raise a glass and celebrate, here's just the thing. Renowned cocktail inventor Dale DeGroff whipped up a cocktail formula worthy of Sully’s name, and the New York Times ordered one. The bartender looked at the recipe and smiled. “It’s a Manhattan—with a splash,” he said.

DeGroff describes his drink as “A sweet Manhattan with a float of Champagne on top. The Manhattan for obvious reasons, but on the sweet side! And the float of Champagne to rejoice that the thing floated and didn’t sink!” Apparently, in addition to being terribly clever, it tastes pretty good, too. “The sparkle and sweetness of the wine played brilliantly off the bitters and the one-to-one ratio of the liquors,” says the Times. See the recipe here.
