(Newser) – Even after a year in the White House fishbowl, President Obama can still pull off a surprise—as he did last night, when he threw a private dinner for Michelle Obama's 46th birthday. The first lady, whose birthday is actually today, knew they were dining out, but not where or with whom. A group of friends from Chicago and Washington, as well as Michelle Obama's mother, Marian Robinson, met the Obamas at Restaurant Nora, an organic eatery not far from the White House.

As the Obamas left, a group of onlookers applauded and burst out singing "Happy Birthday." A pool reporter asked, " Was the First Lady surprised? " and a guest responded that she was, the Chicago Tribune reports.

There's a reason Newser has a content slider. And I'm only saying that once.
