(Newser) – Thanks to a Brewers' loss and a gutsy performance by Ted Lilly, the Cubs took sole possession of first place in the National League Central. Lilly, pitching on short rest, allowed just two runs and five hits against the Reds.  The Cubs won the game in the 8th on Matt Murton's pinch-hit fielder's choice that scored Ryan Theriot.

The Cubs and Brewers have been neck-and-neck for more than a month.  "When we win, they win.  When we lose, they lose," said third basement Aramis Ramirez. "Hopefully, we can separate ourselves a little bit but I don't think it's going to happen. It's going to go all the way to the end."
