Actor Gabriel Byrne revealed yesterday that he was molested by priests as a child at his Irish school and at an English seminary. "Unfortunately, I experienced sexual abuse," said the star of In Treatment and Miller's Crossing. "It was a known fact that there was this particular man, and you didn't want to be left in the dressing room with him. There were certain sexual boundaries that were crossed." The school and seminary were run by the Christian Brothers Catholic order of priests.

It took "years to come to terms with it and forgive those incidents that had deeply hurt me," he told an Irish television program, remarking that the incidents were "mixed up with fear and shame." In his later life "difficulties with certain issues could have been attributable to that," he added. He also talked about beaten regularly by the priests, and his battle with alcoholism. Byrne studied to be a priest for over four years.
