A Virginia man turned himself in to police this morning, surrendering to two officers outside the Appomattox home where police believe he shot and killed eight people yesterday. Police had thought they had Christopher Speight surrounded in a nearby wooded area. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that he surrendered without incident, and is being taken to an undisclosed location for questioning. Charges are pending.

Police say schools will remain closed as previously announced, despite Speight’s surrender. The hunt for the 39-year-old Speight began yesterday, after police found a shooting victim barely alive along a country road. They then found seven dead bodies in and around a nearby home. Police say Speight was acquainted with the victims; one source tells the newspaper Speight's wife and son were among the victims. (More Christopher Speight stories.)
