Strong earnings from Apple and a high consumer-confidence reading weren't enough to sustain gains through the close today, as investors awaited news from a two-day Fed meeting on interest rates that started today, the Wall Street Journal reports.

  • The Dow lost 3 points to close at 10,194.
  • The Nasdaq fell 7 points, settling at 2,204.
  • The S&P 500 dropped 5 points, closing at 1,092.
