Obama Spars With GOP

President chides Republicans for telling constituents he'll 'destroy America'

(Newser) – President Obama went toe-to-toe with House Republicans today, accusing them of opposing legislation for political gain. Obama chastised the Republicans for labelling health care reform as a "Bolshevik plot" and said, "The fact of the matter is, many of you, if you voted with the administration on something, are politically vulnerable with your own base," Obama said. "Because what you've been telling your constituents is, 'This guy's doing all kinds of crazy stuff that's going to destroy America.'"

Speaking at a House Republican event in Baltimore, Obama said he expects the party to challenge his ideas but was disappointed in the GOP's uniform opposition. He singled out moves conservatives theoretically support, like the stimulus, which contained "$300 billion" in tax cuts, Politico reports. "Let's face it, some of you have been at the ribbon-cuttings for some of these important projects in your communities," Obama said.

He deals with the same opposition Bush did for most of his last term. I'm arguing one way or another whether it's right, but I will say, Bush didn't whine about it and, like it or not, got some things done in Washington.

To be honest, SL, I don't remember any major legislation in the first year of Bush's admin. that I could use as an example, but after being attacked on 9/11 it put everything in a different context than any normal political landscape. Everyone was pretty much on the same page, for moral and political reasons, and I don't think you can make a direct comparison. But regardless, I still think the difference is in the numbers. The Democrats' recent super majority gave them a short window of opportunity to try to pass as much possible, and they bit off more than the country was willing to chew, imo.

I'd rather be in a room full of DLYs than a room with one libtard. At least a room full of DLYs is potty trained.
