China Urges Obama Not to Meet Dalai Lama

Call it an 'excuse' to 'interfere in China's internal affairs

(Newser) – If Barack Obama meets with the Dalai Lama when he visits Washington this month, it’ll “seriously undermine the political foundations of Sino-US relations,” China warned the US today. With those relations already strained by the US weapons sale to Taiwan, meeting the Lama would “threaten trust and cooperation,” a Communist Party official told reporters, according to al Jazeera. “ We oppose any attempt by foreign forces to interfere in China's internal affairs using the Dalai Lama as an excuse.”

Oh boy. Either we meet with him- which I expect- and china gets pissed, or we don't meet with him and play dead. The only reason for China to ask this is if they want an excuse to start hostilifying relations. And THAT'S a scary thought.

(NEWSER) - A Tibetan nun protesting China's policies has died after setting herself on fire outside a nunnery in Sichuan province, the Free Tibet group says. The 20-year-old woman, who called for religious freedom in Tibet and the return of the Dalai Lama, is the ninth Buddhist clergy member—and the first woman—to set herself on fire since March to protest China's policies, CNN reports. (NEWSER) - The Dalai Lama says it’s up to him to decide whether he should be reincarnated—and of course China isn't having any of that. Beijing today dismissed any successor picked by the spiritual leader himself as illegal, following the 76-year-old’s statement this weekend that he’ll make a decision on reincarnation when he’s “about 90." (AP) - A Harvard-trained legal scholar was sworn in today as the new head of the Tibetan government-in-exile, taking over from the Dalai Lama as leader of his people's fight for freedom. Lobsang Sangay, who was elected in April by tens of thousands of Tibetans in exile, was surrounded by hundreds of Buddhist monks and nuns as well as the Dalai Lama as he took the oath of office in the northern Indian city of Dharmsala, where the exile administration is based. (AP) - President Obama held a White House meeting today with the Dalai Lama, hours after China called on the US to rescind the invitation. The White House said that during the 45-minute private session, Obama reiterated his support for the protection of Tibetans' human rights in China, as well as the preservation of Tibet's religious, cultural, and linguistic traditions. In a nod to the criticism from Beijing, Obama also stressed that he considers a cooperative relationship between the US and China vital, and he restated US policy that it does not support Tibetan independence.
