(Newser) – Much of Washington is at a halt tonight, with snow falling at the rate of up to 3 inches an hour from the fearsome storm—perhaps the worst in modern history—working its way toward the capital. Above-ground portions of the city’s Metro system are closed, and expected to remain so through at least Saturday, the Post reports; bus service is also stopped indefinitely.

“Stay in unless you absolutely have to be out,” one transit official advised after two men were killed in suburban Virginia when they were struck by a truck as they attempted to help a stranded motorist. “We could be looking at near-whiteout conditions, and it’s going to be hard for the plows to see people. We’ve still got a lot of storm ahead of us.”
