As the New York Times finally addresses its supposed bombshell David Paterson article, without actually saying much of anything, WPIX thinks it knows the real story—and it has nothing to do with sex. Federal prosecutors are investigating Paterson's possible trading of a gaming contract at Aqueduct Raceway for a political endorsement. The potential corruption has already been posited as the focus of the much-speculated-about Times article, but the theory is now gaining steam.
Meanwhile, an unbylined—and fairly self-referential—Times piece slams the "self-feeding, self-referential frenzy" surrounding the rumors. It goes on to rehash Paterson's anger that the paper won't clear his name, but does not go on to actually clear his name. "Obviously we are not responsible for what other news organizations are reporting," says the Times' Metro editor in a vague non-denial. "It’s not coming from the Times."
