Billboards Paint Abortion as Attack on Black Babies

It's 'in your face,' say supporters

(Newser) – Controversial anti-abortion billboards in Georgia are charging that abortion is making black children an "endangered species." The campaign, sponsored by Georgia Right to Life, highlights the fact that African-American women are three times more likely to have an abortion than white women. Anti-abortion advocates across the country have lauded the strategy: "It's ingenious," said the director of the Life Education and Resource Network. "This campaign is in your face."

But abortion rights supporters blast the strategy as exploitative "To use racist arguments to try to bait black people to get them to be anti-abortion is disgusting," one professor tells AP. "These one-issue approaches are not about saving the black family or black children. It's just a distraction."

@WelcomeTo313 : The scenario you described is extremely difficult and unfortunately not that rare :( and I have no authority to dictate what someone should do, but I don't think murdering the child should be the first line of defense. A child can be given up for adoption for example if it is unwanted. As for other 'unplanned pregnancies' - I have no sympathy. If you created the child, you should be willing to give it a chance to breathe, or else you don't deserve to be.

You do better when you concentrate on the simple, black and white problems, HC (to help or not to help in Haiti.) The argument you make here is incomprehensible to me. I'm a supporter of Roe vs. Wade. The Supreme Court has spoken, and the group that put up this billboard is insensitive to say the least, and arguably racist in my opinion. Even riffran agrees.

Reader, I'm sure that was a factor of the time period and that white pregnant girls got the same info from PP as black pregnant girls. I'm glad you were able to keep your baby and have your lovely family. Your story is important, but it most certainly does not prove that "black babies" were targeted.
