Certain red wines can prevent heart disease, if drunk in moderation every day.   (?quinn.anya)

(Newser) – Every week there seems to be a new study showing how wine protects against cancer…or can kill you. The one thing most researchers seem to agree on: Red is better than white. But which red, and how much? Will Lyons tackles the question in his Wall Street Journal column, ultimately citing The Wine Diet, which claims the healthiest way to drink certain red wines is, well, every day.

Red wines with high levels of procyanidins can help prevent heart disease, but the effects only work for a short time—so two to three small glasses must be drunk each day to maximize benefits. And no, saving up those two to three glasses for one weekend binge won’t work. Which vintages are you looking for? Procyanidin-rich wines from the St. Mont and Madiran appellations in the southwest of France, especially those that use the Tannat grape.
