(AP) – A Kentucky man has been arrested and charged with posting a poem threatening President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama on a white supremacist website. The Secret Service said Johnny Logan Spencer Jr. of Louisville wrote and posted the poem, titled "The Sniper," on a site called NewSaxon.org.

A special agent said the poem describes a gunman shooting and killing a "tyrant," later identified as the president. Spencer is scheduled to appear before a judge today for a detention hearing. He's in federal custody charged with making threats against the president and threatening to kill or injure a major candidate for the office of the president.

Thank you newser for the related story at the bottom of the page which reminds us that threats against the president have quadrupled since Obama took office stretching the resources of the Secret Service. They are charged with investigating every potential arrest and it is the job of the prosecutors to decide whether to proceed with a criminal charge and bring the matter before the judiciary. The Secret Service cannot be too zealous in carrying out their mission, IMO, given the dismal record of the US in protecting its presidents from assassination and assassination attempts.
