(Newser) – Marie-Philip Poulin’s two first-period goals stood up tonight as the Canadian women’s hockey team shut out the US, 2-0, to claim the gold medal at the Vancouver Olympics. Shannon Szabados turned away all 28 shots she faced. It’s the third consecutive gold for the Canadians, who have won 15 Olympic contests in a row since losing in the 1998 final to the Americans, the AP notes.

Congratulations to both the Canadian and US women's hockey teams for demonstrating a high level of skill, effort, and tenacity in a well fought gold medal game tonight.

A special congratrulatuions to the Canadian Team on their well deserved win.

Just as the world views the pivotal playoff game in men's hockey to be between Canada and Russia, the key playoff game in women's hockey has been established as being between Canada and the USA.
