Merck drops on health-care uncertainty

Dow Up 12; Day's Gains Fizzle

Stocks lost hold of the day's gains as investors pulled out of commodity producing stocks. Alcoa led Dow lower with a 1.3% decline, the Wall Street Journal reports.

  • The Dow gained 12 points to close at 10,564.
  • The Nasdaq rose 8 points, closing at 2,341.
  • The S&P 500 added 2 points to settle at 1,140.
