(Newser) – The days of PlayStations and Xboxes are now officially numbered—or at least, they will be if OnLive has its way. The much-hyped online streaming game platform will launch on June 17, the company announced today. The service allows users to play whatever game they want, instantly, and because it uses remote hardware to do it, users would theoretically never need to buy a new console or upgrade their computers again.

“We want to take your dollars from hardware and let you spend it on software,” explains the company's COO. “We are a new platform and we're building a network and infrastructure to last for the next 30 years of gaming, not the next five years.” The service will cost $15 a month. Launch titles include Assassin’s Creed, Prince of Persia, and Borderlands.

So, I go to the 'Onlive' site. I click on 'click here' to watch a STREAMING video. 'OnLive' gaming is based on STREAMING, cloud based technology. Stay with me...
The video is CHOPPY AS HELL. I watch Netflix streaming movies (2 hour movies, tv shows, etc.) INSTANTLY, no lag, great picture/sound. If 'OnLive' can't have a decent streaming VIDEO about their own site, how crappy will a bandwidth intense, real time STREAMING game
be??? MAJOR FAIL.

Plus I've read some comments saying this is 'just video'.
It is not. This is a client/server cloud based technology, using a plugin for your browser.
The rollout is targeted towards existing PC or MAC users, and a set top box for TVs.
With the advent of FIOS and other ultrabandwidth connections, this is a good idea, but not feasible
at this point due to very few consumers having access to such speeds. Great idea, wrong time.

It works liek so, the game is played on their high tech machines and then streamed to your house. THe big problem with this is multiplayer game lag. - Early testing has shown unsustainable gameplay if players weren't in the same region. (ie Northeastern United States)
