Men think ink give them super-human powers

(Newser) – Heavily tattooed men are pouring into Bangkok for the Wat Bang Phra, an annual festival celebrating the power of Yan tattoos. Devotees of this increasingly popular body adornment believe their ink gives them a wide array of super-human powers, which they demonstrate during the Wat Bang Phra by flailing about and screaming like lunatics, CNN reports.

Belief in the tattoos date back hundreds of years, and some believe they’ll offer special protection given the turbulent politics of Thailand. Others believe the tattoos bring luck, money, or women. “You can't control it, sometimes it controls your body,” says one man who came all the way from Malaysia for the event. “But it is a good thing, it's a good thing for the spirit to come to the body. It's a blessing.”

(NEWSER) - Three Iranians suspected of plotting Bangkok bomb attacks on Israeli diplomats arranged to meet women as they planned their missions—and they weren't 72 virgins . They spent hours over two nights partying with prostitutes at a Thai beach resort in Pattaya, known for its sex industry, say authorities. One of the prostitutes has been brought in to identify the men in Bangkok, where they're being held, reports MSNBC . The hookers took a cell-phone snap of the hard-partying Muslims that has been published in the Bangkok Post. Thai couple breaks world record for longest kiss

(NEWSER) - A male couple in Thailand spent more than two days kissing to break the Guinness World Record for longest kiss. The competition began Sunday in Pattaya, and ended, fittingly enough, today on Valentine's Day. Couples had to stay in a space measuring one square meter, could only take water and food through a straw, and had to be accompanied by a referee on bathroom breaks, the Telegraph reports. The winners, who kissed for 50 hours, took home a diamond ring worth more than $3,200 for their troubles, plus a hotel gift voucher worth twice that. Iranian Man Blows Off Own Leg in Thai Bombing

Bangkok rocked by series of explosions

(NEWSER) - An Iranian man blew his own leg off in Bangkok today, as a series of explosions rocked the Thai capital, the New York Times reports. The first blast occurred in the house the man was renting in a residential neighborhood; witnesses say three men who appeared to be foreigners ran from the house after its roof was torn off, including the man who was later injured. He was disoriented and threw hand grenades at a taxi and at police officers, but the second bomb he attempted to lob failed to reach the officers and instead took his leg off. Three Thai people and the taxi driver suffered minor injuries in the explosions. More»

Dissidents fear losing free-speech tool

(NEWSER) - Twitter's controversial decision to allow censorship of tweets on a country-by-country basis has won praise from two of the countries with the busiest censors. In Thailand—ranked 153rd in the world for press freedom because of its strict laws against offending the monarchy—the country's information minister called the move a "welcome development," adding that the government has already received "good co-operation" from Google and Facebook.
