O'Brien Not Making Any Dough Off Tour

Former host just wants to keep 'Tonight Show' staffers employed

(Newser) – Conan O’Brien’s ascension to sainthood continues: The former late-night host won’t make a single penny off his upcoming comedy tour. No, he’s simply staging the Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour as a way to employ former Tonight Show staffers, sources tell TMZ. And tickets are selling out, meaning those staffers will likely have an even longer stint than originally planned as O’Brien adds more shows to the 30 already named.

Brilliant strategic move. He keeps his staff and team employed and functioning so they will not have to warm up for the next show, keeps himself relevant in the news cycle and gain loads of publicity. He should have been so shrewd with his Tonight Show contract. I doubt he will be burnt again.

O'Brien's TV viewership has plunged 60% since show debut

(NEWSER) - Conan O'Brien is bombing on late-night TV and it's hitting TBS hard in the pocketbook. Viewership of his program has plunged some 60% since its debut last fall. TBS forked out a $12 million annual salary for the funnyman and boasted that Conan was going to be the "building block" of a network revival, reports the Wall Street Journal . But the Time Warner-owned channel isn't throwing in the towel yet, and is instead investing more bucks on program production and lead-in shows to woo viewers. (NEWSER) - Conan O’Brien’s new show debuts Monday, and there’s one person you should never expect to see as a guest: Jay Leno. “No, there are certain things I will not do, regardless of the price,” O’Brien tells Playboy , although he adds that Leno “can come as the musical guest, because that I want to see.” O’Brien adds that his goal for his new show is “eight months on the air. (NEWSER) - Jay Leno is not having a good summer. In fact, he's having his worst summer ever, at least as far as Tonight Show ratings are concerned. This summer is actually the lowest-rated ever for the show—and even Conan O'Brien pulled in better numbers for the coveted 18-49 demographic last year than Leno is doing this year. Miniseries The Pacific scored the most nominations with a whopping 24, the AP reports. (NEWSER) - Conan O'Brien's network wants him nominated for an Emmy Award—for a show that aired on another network. TBS, where the late-night host/martyr's latest effort will debut in November, is running "for your consideration" ads touting The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien, which crashed and burned on NBC.
