(Newser) – A baby elephant who went into a coma in the womb while his mother spent a full week in labor has made his public debut at a Sydney zoo. Nicknamed Mr. Shuffles for his early difficulty walking, the calf captivated onlookers with his first shambling spin around his enclosure. “I'd say he's going to be 100%,” a delighted zookeeper told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Mr. Shuffles stayed close to his mother, Porntip, as he made the rounds, sniffing his new environment and struggling up small inclines. The zookeeper praised his "amazing recuperative powers" and said it “would have been difficult for him to survive in the wild.” Up next is a new name: The zoo is running a web vote on seven Thai names, one of which means “miracle.” Less »
