Facebook Turns to Indian Workers

Company plans to double number of support centers

(Newser) – Facebook is bumping its number of support center to four with a new office in Hyderabad, India. The Indian office, the company's first in Asia, will supplement existing operations in Palo Alto, Calif., and Dublin, and a recently announced Austin, Texas office, and let the company provide better round-the-clock, multi-lingual service to its international users, a Facebook exec said in a blog post.

Facebook is expanding rapidly abroad, the exec noted, with 70% of its 400 million users—which include 8 million Indians—now coming from outside the US. The Facebook office in India will have online sales and operations teams to assist customers and advertisers but the company has no current plans to outsource its engineering and product development to India, PC World reports.

By having multiple support centers in a variety of time zones, we can provide better round-the-clock, multi-lingual support.

We wonder why our unemployment rate is so high yet we hear stories like this every day. If these huge companies were heavily taxed in order to conduct business overseas maybe they'd be happy to pay American workers what we need to be paid. It doesn't seem quite fair that these companies are allowed to pay foreign workers such low wages and still get the incentives, benefits and tax breaks of claiming to be an American company. Just saying......

Years ago I worked for a call center in California that opened an office in India and told us they had no intentions to outsource our jobs. Within a year we were all laid off.
