Investigators find it easy to transport 'radioactive' material to and fro

(Newser) – It is easy to smuggle radioactive material across the border between Canada and the US, CNN reports. Investigators from the Government Accountability Office testified before Congress today that they were able to pass from one country to the other with a duffle bag containing what looked like radioactive components, and never saw a police or border-security officer.

The investigators made three crossings of the northern border in fall 2006, and only once did a concerned citizen call the authorities and describe their vehicle. A Border Patrol official told senators the finding did not come as a surprise, with the US focused more on securing its southern border with Mexico, where most traffic enters the country.

(NEWSER) - Authorities have found the bodies of 252 illegal immigrants in the Arizona desert this year, an all-time high—even though the number of people crossing illegally is down. That’s in part because increased border security has driven would-be crossers to ever more remote and dangerous routes, NPR explains, and in part because Border Patrol simply has more people looking. “We’re getting more skeletal remains,” says one local medical examiner. “There’s greater presence out there by the Border Patrol and whoever, and they’re finding more people who’ve been out there for awhile.” More»

(NEWSER) - The agency that patrols our nations borders is grappling with a rise in suicide among its agents. (NEWSER) - A US Border Patrol agent's account of the fatal shooting of a teen at the Mexican border this week is contradicted by a video obtained by CNN. The video, shot by a witness on the Mexican side of the border, shows an officer aiming at a suspect 60 feet away. The Border Patrol's account of the incident says shots were fired only after "the subjects surrounded the agent and continued to throw rocks at him." More»
