“David After Dentist” might just put David DeVore through college. DeVore’s family has turned the YouTube sensation into a veritable cottage industry. They get money from licensing the wildly popular viral video, from its YouTube ads, and from the merchandise they sell on their site, CNN reports. “We have made a significant amount of money,” DeVore’s dad, also named David, said in a presentation at SXSW, pegging the earnings in the “low six figures.”
But some have criticized the DeVores for exploiting David. Bill O’Reilly pointedly told the elder DeVore, “I would never do this to my kids,” and a Chicago Sun-Times columnist called for David to be placed in state custody. But DeVore says he got David’s permission before posting the video, and the kid, now 9, helps the family run the business. “There’s nothing that I wouldn’t do to protect David,” says his dad. “There’s just been nothing to worry about through all of this.” (More David After Dentist stories.)
