Key Dem: 'We Have the Votes—Now, as We Speak'

Chair of House Democratic caucus says they've got it done

(AP) – The chairman of the Democratic caucus in the House says his party has the 216 votes needed to pass President Barack Obama's historic health care bill. Speaking Sunday on ABC's This Week, Connecticut Rep. John Larson said, in his words, "We have the votes now—as we speak."

House Democrats are predicting that a rare Sunday session will produce one of the most significant legislative triumphs in decades: passage of a bill to overhaul the nation's health care system to provide coverage to millions of people. Republicans resolutely oppose the bill.

I don't understand why these naysayers continue to harp on -- the people don't want - THEY DO WANT!!!! We may not like everything about the bill, but we realize the need to start somewhere, and the good aspects of this bill are an awesome start, especially considering that we've been trying to get something done in this healthcare arena for so many years. You naysayers - PLEASE - get off your pulpit and read something other than the nutty-right-wing lies and stop drinking their kool-aid.

I have more work to do on my recovery before I can again serve in elected office," wrote Giffords in a resignation letter to John Boehner read aloud by Wasserman Schultz. States have chance to organize their own 'exchanges'

(NEWSER) - Obamacare needs more than the Supreme Court's approval this summer. It also requires states to organize "exchanges" where people can buy health insurance—but 75% of uninsured Americans live in states that are yet to get cracking, the AP reports. Some states, like Florida and Louisiana, have flat-out returned federal dollars for the program as part of GOP opposition to Obamacare. But 16 others are paralyzed by a lack of legislation or partisan bickering. More»

New rules aim to increase transparency

(NEWSER) - Studies have found that when doctors accept payments from drug companies, it can influence their treatment decisions—so the Obama administration will soon require drug companies to disclose those payments. The New York Times reports that around 25% of doctors receive cash from drug companies for consulting, speaking engagements, and more; in addition, almost two-thirds accept staff lunches or dinners out. The new requirements, part of the new health care law, will ensure that such payments and gifts, even small ones, are disclosed on a website; drug companies will be subject to fines for any omissions. Judge Roberts: All Justices Can Rule on Obamacare

Chief justice says Supreme Court peers can't withdraw

(NEWSER) - The Supreme Court's chief justice yesterday defended the right of his fellow justices to rule on Obamacare, the New York Times reports. John G. Roberts didn't mention justices Clarence Thomas and Elena Kagan by name, but both are facing calls to withdraw from the ruling because of their past interest in the health care program. The issue, as Roberts sees it, is that Supreme Court justices are too far up the legal totem pole to be judged or replaced. More»
