Tribal gambling hurts city, but Renoans find ways to adapt

(Newser) – Reno's lost billions to Native American casinos, yet the Nevada town is growing again, even thriving. How did Renoans react when Tribal casinos lured away their business? They put up shop as gambling consultants and sold even more slot machines. Now downtown is growing: Developers are free to build without powerful casinos blocking their path, the Economist reports.

Reno once shrugged off Indian casinos, one owner even asking if they planned to gamble in tents. Then betters stopped coming, and hotels laid off workers and shut down. Now Reno, a railway hub, is attracting retailers who like the state's lack of red tape. And gamblers who who think that Native casinos have "gone cold" on them are driving to Reno to lose money there.

(NEWSER) - The boss of a Hells Angels gang was killed and two rival bikers were injured in a weekend shootout at a Nevada casino. A second drive-by shooting of a biker later triggered a state of emergency in the town of Sparks, though it wasn't clear if the shootings were related. Jeffrey "Jethro" Pettigrew, 51, the leader of the Hells Angels San Jose bikers, was killed in the first shooting during a confrontation with members of the Vagos motorcycle gang, according to cops. Shots were fired in the middle of the Nugget hotel and casino near Reno, but only the three bikers were struck by bullets, reports ABC News . More»

(NEWSER) - The balance sheet of Atlantic City's Tropicana Casino has taken a pounding from a pair of high rollers who won more than $5 million each just 6 weeks apart. A blackjack player beat the casino for $5.8 million in April and a craps player won $5.3 million last week, leaving a $150,000 tip that was shared among dealers on duty that night, AP reports. Officials for the casino, bought out of bankruptcy last year by billionaire investor Carl Icahn, say they're sticking with their new emphasis on high-stakes table games play, despite the huge losses. (AP) - Soon it might be more difficult to concentrate on the cards at one Atlantic City casino. The Tropicana Casino and Resort is creating a new "party pit" near its Rumba Lounge nightclub where female blackjack and roulette dealers will wear bustiers and stockings, reports the AP . The casino is hiring "nice-looking" dealers to work the six blackjack and two roulette tables, which will debut over the July 4th weekend. The racy uniforms come on the heels of some revealing flapper costumes that have already generated two lawsuits for Resorts Casino Hotel. More»

The Pennsylvania man took home $4.23 million from Caesars, some $5 million from Borgata, and $5.8 million from Tropicana—and he scored that last bundle in a matter of 12 hours. How does he do it? “There's no magic to this. Eventually, someone would whack them. I'm just glad it was me,” he tells the Press of Atlantic City .
