(Newser) – The University of Wyoming has canceled a planned public lecture from famous ex-Weatherman and Obama compadre Bill Ayers, citing an “outpouring of criticism” and “security concerns.” The university says it had received 300 calls and emails as of yesterday, and the “vast majority” of them were negative. But the university’s president wants you to know he’s not just chickening out in the face of an angry mob.

“Observers would be incorrect to conclude that UW simply caved in to external pressure,” he wrote in a statement—it was merely “sensitive” to the criticism, reports the Laramie Boomerang. “The University of Wyoming is one of the few institutions remaining in today's environment that garners the confidence of the public,” he added. “The visit by Professor Ayers would have adversely impacted that reputation.”
